Overview

The Bing Stanford in Washington (BSIW) Program is a fully immersive residential program for juniors and seniors.  Students live together in the Bass Center, in picturesque Woodley Park, where they also take classes and eat meals together.  During the week students in the Program work at full-time internships at a wide range of governmental, non-governmental and cultural organizations.  On weekends students often attend cultural events and explore D.C.

The BSIW Program operates during the Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters of the academic year. All three quarters feature academic program with a general focus on politics and public policy in a variety of different areas. Students from all majors are encouraged to attend the BSIW Program.

There are four main components to the BSIW Program: Internships, Academics, Cultural Events and Life at the Bass Center.

Internships:

The internship is the centerpiece of the BSIW Program for many students. Each student is individually placed in a substantive full-time internship matched to his or her interests by the Program Staff. There are no set internship slots in the BSIW Program, each quarter staff works with students accepted to the program to find an internship that meets their individual needs.  This could mean working at a location where Stanford students have worked in the past or finding an entirely new internship location.

Academics:

Classes take the form of weekly seminars taught by local policy experts and Stanford faculty. Executive branch officials, members of Congress, Supreme Court Justices, diplomats, journalists and other policy makers are frequent guest speakers.

Cultural Events:

A highlight of the BSIW Program is access to the vast cultural resources of Washington D.C. and the surrounding area. Students attend the Washington National Opera and the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center, theater and dance performances, and enjoy day trips to museums, Gettysburg, and other local historical sites.

Life at the Bass Center:

One of the most popular aspects of the program is life at the Bass Center.  Students enjoy the opportunity to spend time with peers who are fully engaged in a similar experience.  During free time and over meals students have the opportunity to discuss their work, in internships and classes, on a deeper level than they often find on campus.  It doesn't hurt that the food is some of the best you can get at Stanford.
